Evaluating Alternative Pest Management Strategies for Organic Apple Production: On-Farm
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION An experiment was conducted beginning in 2003 at a certified organic apple orchard in Iowa to evaluate insect pest and disease incidence in four scab– resistant apple cultivars (Delate et al., 2005). This on-farm experiment was resumed in 2007 after new grant funds were secured to compare pest loads with previous years’ results. The objective of the on-farm demonstration was to compare apple cultivar susceptibility to the key pests, including codling moth, plum curculio, and apple diseases under a typical, commercial organic spray program, following practices prescribed by the USDA-AMS-NOP (2008).

Organic Pest Management Decisions: A Systems Approach
Organic farmers make system-level crop protection decisions that combine complementary insect, disease, nematode, and weed management strategies. Data from a national survey of U.S. organic farmers were used in a multivariate count data model to identify the farm and regional factors influencing adoption across the linked pest management categories. The results showed that weed management requi...

The increasing concern over the continued use of pesticides is pressurising apple growers to look for alternatives to chemical pest control. The re-discovery, and subsequent conservation, of the beneficial predatory mite, Anystis baccarum (Linnaeus) (Acari: Anystidae), in Bramley apple orchards in Northern Ireland offers a potential alternative control component for incorporation into integrate...
متن کاملEvaluation of Pest Management Tactics for Organic Apple Production
In New York State, a large number of both native and introduced insect and mite species attack apples grown in commercial apple orchards. Control of this pest complex is particularly challenging, because unlike the more arid apple production regions on the West Coast, apple orchards in N.Y. are commonly in close proximity to semi-wooded areas having an abundance of wild apple and hawthorn speci...

Apple flea weevil, Orchestes pallicornis (Say) was a sporadic pest in the early 1900s and has reemerged as a severe pest of cultivated apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) inMichigan. Organic apple orchards inMichigan have had outbreak population levels of apple flea weevil since 2008 and damage has resulted in up to 90% losses. Apple flea weevil is a small, 2–3-mm black weevil with enlarged high leg...
متن کاملIndividual and interactive effects of crop type and management on weed and seed bank composition in an organic rotation
We investigated the effects of organic and conventional pest and fertility management on weed cover and the seed bank community in an organic rotation. The study was conducted during the 4th and 5th years of an organic rotation on part of a long term organic-conventional comparison trial. Results showed that although crop type (potato vs. cabbage) in a single year significantly affected wee...
